The cornerstone of the SKIES project is the Rapid Tech Skills pathway. This is designed for students and young professionals who need to pivot quickly into the digital economy. The foundation provides scholarships and subsidies to reduce tuition costs for intensive “bootcamp” style learning in:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning: Learning to build predictive models and automated solutions.

  • Cybersecurity: Equipping students with the tools to protect digital infrastructure against evolving global threats.

  • Data Science: Training in data mining, analysis, and visualization to drive business intelligence.

  • Software Engineering & Robotics: Focusing on full-stack development and the integration of hardware and software for automation.

SKIES doesn’t just train individuals; it strengthens the “trainers.” The project provides financial grants and institutional support to:

  • Incubators and Accelerators: Helping them refine their business models and improve the quality of support they give to startups.

  • Tech Bootcamp Providers: Enhancing their curricula to ensure they align with international standards and current market needs.

Beyond technical coding or engineering, the foundation emphasizes the “Innovation Mindset.” Through hackathons and incubation pathways, participants learn:

  • Product Development: Turning a digital skill into a tangible solution for sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure.

  • Sustainable Business Management: Skills in scaling a startup, managing finances, and navigating the legalities of the Kenyan and global markets.

  • Soft Skills for the Digital Age: Emphasizing teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving within high-pressure tech environments.

A significant part of the SKIES mandate is ensuring that the future of tech is inclusive. The foundation has made a concerted effort to increase female participation in STEM.

  • Women in Tech: The program specifically targets women for its tech bootcamps, with recent cohorts seeing over 50% female enrollment.

  • Regional Balancing: By partnering with universities and centres across the country—from Nairobi to Kisumu and Nyeri—it ensures that “future skills” aren’t restricted to the capital city.

SKIES (Strengthening Kenya’s Innovation Ecosystem) is an initiative under the Kenya Industry and Entrepreneurship Project (KIEP). Its primary goal is to boost innovation and productivity across Kenya by providing financial support and technical training to the "intermediaries" of our tech world—specifically incubators, accelerators, and technology bootcamp providers.

Speed and relevance. While a traditional degree provides broad theory over four years, Skies focuses on Rapid Tech Skills. We condense high-level training into intensive, practical sessions (3–6 months) that focus strictly on what the job market currently demands, such as AI integration and Cybersecurity architecture.

One of our primary goals is to empower Kenyans to compete in the global digital marketplace. Our training includes modules on how to navigate international freelance platforms and manage remote projects, allowing you to earn in foreign currency while based right here at home.

All accredited intermediaries and bootcamp providers are listed on our official portal. You can check our "Partners" page to ensure the institution you are applying to is eligible for the Skies tuition subsidies and scholarships.

The journey doesn't stop at graduation. We provide a bridge to our network of partnered incubators and accelerators. This gives you access to mentorship, potential seed funding opportunities, and "Demo Days" where you can pitch your digital solutions to real-world investors and industry leaders.

Definitely. While some advanced tracks require a basic understanding of logic or mathematics, many of our partner bootcamps offer "foundational modules." These are designed to take you from a curious beginner to a confident practitioner in a matter of weeks, provided you have the dedication to learn.
